Nana

When speaking of our "Mobile" family, usually we hear...

Pawpaw...Pawpaw...Pawpaw!!!  :-)

Which is definitely not a bad thing!  Our kids love their Pawpaw...and his deer...and his pheasant...and his camo clothes...and his 4-wheeler...and his riding lawn mower... well, you get the picture. *grins*

So, in effort to be fair, we declare that today is officially NANA-day!

Our kids love their Nana...and cooking with Nana...and decorating the Christmas tree with Nana...and painting fingernails with Nana...and blowing/popping bubbles with Nana...and watching Beauty and the Beast with Nana...and getting spoiled by Nana...well, you get the picture. *grins*

Here are a few "Nana" pictures - proof that
Nana is definitely someone special to our little ones!

We love you, Nana!!

Not Me! Monday

Mckmama- Not Me Monday

At my brother-in-law's wedding recently, I did not find myself  bribing Austin with nerds...one at a time...to keep him quiet for the ceremony.  I do not use bribery techniques, and certainly abstain from candy almost always!  I certainly wouldn't put the two together to keep him still and quiet for 30 minutes...and it certainly did not work!! ;-)

After almost 4 hours of wedding pictures and keeping the kids still and quiet not killing anyone or themselves, I did not almost laugh when my beautiful little flower girl {Katie} chose to "pretend" to throw down her leaves as she walked down the aisle.  I suppose she didn't want anyone to have to clean up her mess like we had to during practice ;-)

I did not find myself feeling like a terrible mother when the dentist informed me that my 4 year old had a cavity on her molar {EEEKKK!!} and my 2 year old had "suspicious spots" on his back two molars!  I am very anal about making sure that I have brushed the kids' teeth several times a day, and even flossing, so you can guess that I was very shocked AND hurt when I received the news from the dentist.

I was not just as shocked to find out that the probable cause for my children's dental issues are linked directly to what I thought was good ---gummy vitamins---which my children took faithfully every day!  Apparently that's a new leading cause of cavities in children, but unfortunately for me, I didn't know this until after the first cavity and "suspicious spots"!  It still hurts to have to say that my little girl has a cavity, though...even if it was from something I never would have thought could cause it.  Take it from me...throw away the gummies!

{And, no, we did not make a big deal about Katie's cavity...especially since it is not her fault.  We merely explained what happened to her and told her we'd have to be sure we stayed away from sticky/gummy things from now on.}

I am not now on a search for non-gummy vitamins (and fiber supplements) that my children can and will take.  Having a little boy who will not eat his veggies like he should and a little girl who, despite her good dieting habits, still needs extra fiber on a daily basis, we've got to find another way, and quick!  Any suggestions/ideas??

I did not just have to discipline my youngest child for taking a large bite into Katie's side.  I've never dealt with biters, and I certainly don't want to start now!  Any suggestions from you Mommies out there on how to be sure it doesn't happen again??

I am not going to, as painfully as it is, end this post with no pictures... *gasp*...but I will be making up for it very soon.  I. Promise.  I just have to get us "back to normal" {unpacked, clothes washed, etc., from our trip} first

Thankful Thursday

There are some things we always think of to list on our "thankful" lists...Jesus Christ, and the salvation He gave to each of us who believes...family and friends who stick by us through thick and thin...shelter and food God provides for us each day...clothes to keep us warm (or cool) depending on the season...a church faithfully preaching the Word of God, seeking to glorify God in all things...

But there are so many things that are much too often overlooked, that I am thankful for...things that at first glance may appear a bit odd or trivial to be thankful for...but things that remind me of how blessed I truly am!

loud laughs
fingerprinted mirrors, windows, and walls

holding hands

quiet snickers and whispers at bedtime

post-it note surprises

little shoes scattered from room to room

piles of laundry to wash and fold

little fingers and toes

butterfly & bunny kisses

homeschooling opportunities
little ones wrapped around my legs

snuggle time

sincere cries

warm days

faith-building circumstances in life

children singing, off-tune or not

new adventures

movie night

cold pillows

child's excitement about anything

love...true love
answered prayers

unanswered prayers

missing kitchen utensils

imagination of a child

boxes and the worlds they open

What "out of the ordinary" blessing are you most thankful for today?

Is it just me...??

Is it just me...??

As Moms, especially, do you ever find yourself thinking that you just know others are thinking {but likely never saying}, "Wow.  I feel sorry for her!"..."Aren't you glad our kids don't act like that when we're eating out{side of our home}?!"..."She sure has her hands full!  And she only has two!..."I will never let my children act like that!"

Having a little one that is officially full-swing in his "terrible two's", and a four-year-old who hasn't yet found her "fabulous four's", I have found myself thinking this a lot lately.  Looking around restaurants, to this Mom, it appears that every child except mine is sitting politely and quietly, eating their veggies {instead of spitting them} with their silverware {not their hands}, and using their napkins {not their sleeves}.  Walking in stores, to this Mom, it appears that every child except mine is staying with their family {not hiding in the clothes racks}, obeying, and doing everything quietly and orderly {not stomping feet or throwing tantrums}.

Please don't misunderstand; I absolutely adore my children.  And I know that they grow up all too fast...and that this too shall pass.  I know everyone has good days and bad days, and that overall, we really do have very obedient, sincere children.  But, am I the only Mom that thinks that everyone else thinks she has it rough, and sometimes even feels a little embarrassment because of it?  Please say I'm not!  I'd really like to think it's this mental make-up that each Mom has built into her, to help keep her pride for her children down to a normal level!  Or...something like that... ;-)

Is it just me...??

Buzz Right Herrreeee!!

Since watching Toy Story I, II, & III, for the first time, and Toy Story I for the hundredth time, I have a Buzz-lovin' boy!

If you've seen the movie even once, I'm sure you know the name "Buzz Lightyear".  I'm here to tell you, however, that my sweet Buzz-lovin' boy insists that his name is not Buzz Lightyear, but "Buzz Right Herrreeee!!"  And, who can blame him?  I mean, Buzz is right here whenever you need him, right??  My Buzz sure is!  He's here practically all day, every day.

He has now reinvented his Home Depot drill into
an all-purpose, any-time-you-need-it "Buzz Right Heerrreeee" laser...
protecting our house day in and day out...
even in his last year's much too small pj's!

Chasing his enemy sweet sister (or anything else nearby)
around the house shouting
"ZAAAPPPPPP!!!!"
 "PPSSSSSHHHHH, PPSSSSHHHHHH!!!"...

Leaving the house with Katie's screams of
"STOOPPPP!!  Mommy, Austin's shooting his laser at me again!"
She's not too fond of "Buzz Right Herrreeee's" newest laser...
well, except for when I'm taking a picture of her,
and then she's totally cool with it. {See??}

So............you've been warned!
Enter into the Barton home with caution...
"Buzz Right Herrreeee" may be right there to greet you
with his newest and coolest laser
ZAAAAPPPPP!!!!!

Katie's Pinch Pot

It's been crazy around here...and won't slow down until after the holidays.  We're getting ready to pack for our trip to Mobile - wedding this weekend, birthday party playdates, dentist appointments, and lots of time with family and friends next week!  But, that also means very little time for blogging.  I promise I will make up for it soon, I miss it more than you

In the meantime, here's a picture of Katie's beautiful clay "pinch pot" she made and painted in art class (homeschool co-op class).  I think she did a fabulous job!! :-)

Words from a Friend

A friend of mine (from college) recently posted something on her blog that I wanted to pass along to you all.  It's something that I have thought about very often...especially since having Austin.  You can read it by going to Little Joys "Mommyhood".

And, before you ask, no this is not a pre-"we are having another baby" post! ;-)

Hope you enjoy, and are challenged to view God's blessings a little differently than you (and definitely I) do often...

Katie

~Katie~
At the age of 4 you...
  • love horses, unicorns, cats, and anything stuffed
  • are excelling in your kindergarten curriculum...and begging daily to do "more school work"
  • still love your veggies and fruit more than your meat
  • weigh 35 lbs and are 41 1/2 inches tall
  • enjoy singing and making up your own lyrics to well-known songs
  • have a very vivid imagination
  • love to bring your trusted horse with you wherever you go...invisible or not ;-)
  • enjoy pop-tarts over most anything for breakfast...no matter how hard I try to change that
  • love to practice writing your letters any chance you get
  • sleep in your "big girl" bed...a twin bed with a rail (just in case...because you wiggle so much)
  • still have tons of fun playing dress-up, and you've even learned how to get your little brother involved in the fun
  • enjoy trying to dance like the ballerinas on your favorite DVDs
  • getting really good at hitting the t-ball
  • still run very fast...
  • love drinking water now...but please, no ice, because you don't like the noise it makes
  • sleep with at least 7 stuffed animals every night
  • still don't like blue jeans...you'd choose cotton pants any day
  • don't have to take a nap anymore (only quiet time), but lately you've asked for naptime almost every day, and of course, I let you
  • doing a great job of learning a new verse each week for your Awana Cubbies club, and you love it
  • miss your sweet friends and family from Mobile a lot, but always make sure to pray for them
  • say the sweetest prayers before bedtime, and you often try to rush through your prayers at meals because you "just can't wait to eat"
  • get easily frustrated when your brother destroys your "masterpieces"...whether it's your art, your meticulously placed toys, or your newest outfit
  • love your brother and beg him to play with you, especially when you are pretending to be "Spirit da West" (as you call it), galloping (and singing) to Get Off of My Back
  • still love pink, purple, and blue colors most of all
  • told me just the other day that you always carry your {imaginary} horse with you, because "you never know when you'll need it"

I Lift Up My Soul - Book Review

I was recently given the opportunity to read and review Charles Stanley's devotional book, "I Lift Up My Soul", through Booksneeze.  The devotional is set up by date, to read over one year's time.  Each devotion typically has a suggested scripture reading, a short key verse, a few paragraphs of application and challenge, and a prayer at the end specific to each day's devotion.

I feel that this would be a great devotional book for someone who would like an easy read devotional before work, school, or even as a family devotional.  The devotionals are short, but are not lacking in the spiritual department.  These devotionals are not the fluffy, feel-good devotionals.  They teach and explain God's word (small amounts at a time), and apply them in a way leaving you ready to put the words to action in your own life.

I love the "suggested scripture reading" for each day, as well.  We are not commanded to read devotional books, but God's word.  But sometimes, it's hard to know where to start or what to read.  This devotional gives you a nice Bible reading plan for each day, to correspond with the day's devotional. I gave this book 4 stars and would recommend it for anyone looking for a great devotional to add to their daily reading.

I received this devotional book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255: "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising."

Can YOURS???

My little boy...

can become "carry-on" luggage in under 45 seconds...

leaving Mommy very curious of his where-abouts!

Can YOURS???

*Note his "Mommy, you weren't supposed to open the suitcase" look...he wasn't at all happy with me for that picture, but I just had to see how he managed fitting in there!
